Denon AVR-1709 7.1-Channel Multi-Zone Home Theater Receiver Overviews Music around the home is now easier to realize than ever before. The AVR-1709 features a powerful seven channel amplifier section that can be easily configured for a 7.1 channel surround sound loudspeaker system, or to drive a 5.1 channel surround sound system in the main room, while at the same time able to drive a pair of stereo speakers in another room. Featuring tremendous video signal handling flexibility, the AVR-1709 features three latest specification v1.3a HDMI digital video inputs and one HDMI output that handles HD signals up to the highest 1080p resolution. As well, the AVR-1709 features on-board video up-conversion, along with three HD component video inputs for additional video signal handling flexibility. For optimum surround sound quality, the Audyssey MultEQ in-room acoustic measurement and optimization system measures the loudspeaker’s overall response (at up to six different measurement points) and tailors the audio signal for the smoothest, most natural-sounding tonal balance throughout the listening space. And, the AVR-1709 is one of the first to offer Audyssey’s Dynamic Volume leveling system, which eliminates jarring volume jumps between TV shows and commercials, as well as Audyssey Dynamic EQ to ensure rich bass and smooth tonal balance, even at low volume levels. Two remote controls are provided – one for the main room, and a second easy-to-use remote control for second zone audio control. Related Products
Customer Review Best Customer Review : The receiver does everything I wanted it to do. I like how it upconverts to component via the red/white/yellow rca's. I have many things hooked up to it and this is a great feature for me. I have HD cable/xbox 360/wii hooked up to the components and I have my Macbook/ipod/and video camera hooked up to the rca's. All of these go into the receiver and 1 component cable out to my Plasma. All works seemlessly! The price was great! Shipping on time as well. Customer Review 1 : POS - F. Lentine - I purchased the AVR-1709 in January of 2009. Got it, set it up, very happy with it for about 4 weeks. One night while watching tv, there's a deafening sound that actually blows the cover off 3 of my wall speakers. The receiver stops making sound the next day. I drive it 30 miles to a service center, wait 3 weeks, drive back to get it and find out that the HDMI board went out. I used it for about 3 more months and occasionally, you could hear a speaker "pop" a little. After a couple of weeks of this my wife and I went out one night and left my in-laws watching our kids. They're watching TV at around 10pm when BOOM! Speaker covers blow off, 4 little kids awake screaming, my inlaws calling us and 911 together, total mayhem. I return it again, am without it (as well as TV, video games, movies, etc. because it's remotely installed) for another month and finally get it back and they tell me not to plug the cable box HDMI into the unit, but to use the components. Ok... Four months go by, and kaboom, again, then it stops making sound at all. I called Denon and asked them about cross-shipping a replacement and their only answer was to take it to the repair facility. Now I've had it a year and been without it almost a quarter of the time, so I decided to call Amazon and see what their advice was. As usual, the whole exchange took about two minutes, they issued me an RMA (1 year later, I might add) and I'm off to buy a Yamaha! Never, ever, buy anything that might break, fail, or come damaged from anyone but Amazon. Customer Review 2 : Returned - A. Mead - CA USA We ordered this receiver and installed it with our existing surround sound system, replacing a Yamaha receiver that had died. Within 4 days, the receiver simply turned off. The next morning we were able to turn it on again but it only stayed on for about 5 minutes before it shut down again. It sounded fine while it worked but we packed it up and shipped it back. We are going to try something else. |

Customer Review Best Customer Review : I have had this receiver for a month now and I'm extremely happy with the sound quality, which is the #1 reason for choosing a receiver. It also has every feature I needed and supports all the latest sound formats. I'm very happy with the upconversion video quality. Note that this receiver can take an analog SD or HD signal and convert it to digital HDMI output, so you only need one connection between your receiver and your TV. Many other receivers do not perform this conversion and you need multiple connections between your receiver and TV. Many people have complained about the manual and complicated setup. In my opinion, the manual is actually very good. The setup is obviously designed by engineers and not a human factors person. I would certainly not expect my parents to be able to set this up, but if you have decent technical knowledge, then you won't have any problems. I did need to consult the manual to understand some parts of the setup, but like I said, the manual was accurate and fine for someone of reasonable technical knowledge. If you want to see for yourself, just download the manual from Denon's web site before you buy it. The receiver does allow you to rename the inputs, but the way you assign the inputs to quick select is very strange indeed. Instead of labeling each input as HDMI 1 - 4, Component 1-2, etc., they label each input with a name such as DVR, DVD, etc. And some labels overlap between the type of input. For example, DVD is an HDMI input and a component input. If you have both DVD inputs in use at the same time, then it will not work by default. You have to go into the setup and assign the component DVD or HDMI DVD another default label, such as DVR. Then you can use both inputs. You can also rename DVR to a custom label, such as XBox or PS3, for example. It would be much more straightforward, if they just has HDMI 1-4, Component 1-2, etc., and then you could label each input with a custom label. Then you could also assign quick select 1 to be HDMI 1, for example. In any case, this part of the setup is complicated, but once it is set up, you don't have to mess with it, so it's worth the hassle if you can figure it out. You can also hide inputs you don't use. Once it is set up, you can press Source Select on the remote and see a list of inputs (with custom labels), and just choose the input you like. So when you see the select list, you will see PS3, Wii, Xbox, Tivo, Apple TV, etc., based on the custom labels you entered. This is nice and the way it should be. My only other complaint about the receiver is that the setup and selection screens are text based and look like they are from the 80s. It would be nice to have HD menus with nice graphics and fonts. However, you don't spend much time in the menus once the system is set up, so I can overlook this. Overall, the receiver is awesome. I would definitely buy it again. I wish they would address my complaints, and I'm sure they will eventually in new models, but like I said, my complaints mostly affect the usability of the setup, and once that is done, you can just enjoy the awesome sound! Customer Review 1 : Not hard to set up at all - Van L. Adams - Athens, OH First I want to say that this is the best reciever I have ever owned. The sound quality is fantastic, and I'm even running it through some fairly cheap yamaha speakers (plan on upgrading speakers soon). My family members have all been impressed by the sound. I can hear sounds in movies and songs that I didn't hear before with my old reciever. But you've probably heard all of this in other reviews. Second and more importantly I wanted to comment on how easy it is to setup. Someone previously wrote a review commenting on how complicated it is to use, and how he owns thousands of dollars of Mac equipment, and blah, blah. I do not understand this at all. I have a samsung LED LCD tv, a samsung blu-ray player, a samsung cable box, a Wii, and I was able to hook them all up and get them all to work with little to no problems at all. I thought the interface was fairly simple and easy to use. The manual is not nearly as difficult to read and understand as other people have said. And the Audessey software runs you through the setup of the speakers step by step. I even got the anynet feature to work on my TV, so when I use my TV remote to adjust the sound it adjusts the sound of the reciever and shows you the sound level on the TV for the reciever, and when you turn the TV off it turns the reciever off. The only gripe I have is with the HD decoding: with some blu-ray player models (including my blu-ray player) you have to have the blu-ray player do the HD sound decoding and not the reciever. This is a known issue with this reciever and some blu-ray players. The denon people on the denon forums say that it sounds the same regardless of which device does the decoding, and that the only thing you are missing by having the blu-ray player do the decoding is the blue light come on on the reciever. But I still think I would rather have the reciever do the decoding. Anyways, that is my 2 cents on this excellent reciever. And as a side note, if you are having trouble using this reciever, just google batpig, and use his guide. Customer Review 2 : Mostly wonderful to own and operate - Adam Collins - Bellevue, WA As with the other Denon components I've owned, the AVR-1910 is well buit, cool running, sonically excellent, and (mostly) wonderful to own. First, the three niggling bits: 1) Denon needs to stop putting meaningless ("SAT", "DVD", "DVR", etc.) labels on inputs, 2) the on-screen configuration interface seems dated, especially for a digital receiver and 3) the remote control interface is finicky: press the buttons too rapidly and the poor receiver is likely to be confused. I gripe about the input labeling because it just makes things more confusing when you're wiring up your receiver. You can rename all of the inputs through the on-screen interface anyway, so why not just give the inputs a number or letter? Let me explain the remote thing, also, and describe why it can be frustrating. The remote interface has a repeater function, much like a computer keyboard: hold a key down for more than half a second and the key starts rapidly repeating itself until you let up on it. Well, the AVR-1910 has that too and it is gets in the way more often than it helps. It's frustrating with the on-screen interface and annoying with the volume control (3 slow taps means +/- 1.5 db, while 3 quick taps could mean anything from +/- 1.5 db to +/- 6.0 db). You'll get used to all of that though, which is why I gave the AVR-1910 a 5 star rating and recommend it as a home theater receiver. The big points for me were the 4 HDMI inputs, generous power output, wonderful video scaling, and the reliability that Denon is known for. I had no idea that the quick select function would be so nice, so that was a major bonus. Basically, you get all of the settings (input options, output options, and volume) the way you want them and hold one of the three "quick select" buttons down. From then on, pressing that quick select button on the receiver (or remote) will recall all of those settings. Even better, the receiver lets you name each of the three quick selects. Despite a few interface issues, this receiver is satisfying and I highly recommend it to anyone in the market for a mid-range 7.1 A/V receiver. |

Customer Review Best Customer Review : I've always been a Denon fan; a great work horse system. I recently upgraded my AVR-1804 to the AVR-2309 after purchasing an HDTV from Amazon. Although I can see the point of reviews claiming a set-up which wasn't overly easy and a manual lacking in some detailed information, it really only took me about an hour and a half to have all seven speakers and all audio/video connections swapped from my 1804 to the new unit. Not half bad, considering the bulk of the time was spent contorting my body to fit behind my shelving...and I may have accidently swapped a left and right front speaker which needed to be rectified. All said and done, the sound is fantastic through my 5-year old Definitive 5.1 surround sound, only made better with the addition of a 4-year old set of Mirage surround sound standers. The existance of the photo port was my main reason for opting for this system over less expensive models, but thats also not to say I wouldnt have chosen this one anyway. With three HDMI ports, along with composite options, I can't complain of a potential lack of future resources. For those needing a fourth HDMI port, the AVR-2809 may be a better option for not much more money. All and all, I've been a huge biased fan of Denon equipment for over 25 years, and after hooking up the 2309, I have a feeling they'll have me in their pocket for 25 more. Customer Review 1 : It was better than I thought. - Al Shing - Philadelphia, PA Denon AVR-2309CI 7.1-Channel Home Theater ReceiverDenon AVR-2809CI When I first started to hook up my new 2309 I was expecting to have a difficult time to get it going based on many reviews that I read. To my surprise the hook up was easy. When I got it going I was blown away by the sound. I hooked up my Panasonic BD30 blu ray player and played Dark Knight Returns, the sound and video was top notch. My home theater speakers consist of 2 JBL E80's, 2 JBL E50's, 1 JBL ES 35 and my subwoofer HSU VTF-2 MK3. These speakers never sounded better. I would highly recommend this receiver. Customer Review 2 : Denon AVR-2309-CI - Joseph Madigan - Sounds great! Speaker setup was a snap with auto-program. Good receiver for the price. Glad I purchased it. Used primarily with home theater and works well with the Samsung LCD TV. |

Customer Review Best Customer Review : I installed the Denon AVR-988 in my home theater system approximately one month ago. The sound quality is excellent and crystal clear with power to spare. Prior to buying this unit, I read most of the reviewers' comments on this site which convinced me to buy it. Another selling point was of course the price; I got this unit from Amazon in February 2009 for less than 0. In summary, this is an excellent AVR for listening to Audio CDs and Movies! Also, the set up right out the box was very easy for me and I am by no means an expert when it comes to audio-visual equipment. The user's manual was not difficult at all to understand; I found it to be very logically written and helpful. I would recommend the Denon AVR-988 to anyone looking to buy a quality AVR for their home theater system; make sure that you couple it with a high quality speaker system (including a subwoofer). Great AVR!! Customer Review 1 : Denon Dual zone receiver - world traveler - CA usa I love this receiver. Unfortunately, my last Denon died. I loved the sound quality so I got this. You can watch TV or a DVD in the Living room and Listen to music or TV or what ever out side with the second zone. Of course the Denon are the only receivers I have to hiring someone to set up because this surround sound stuff gets complicated, when you have Ipod, DVD, VCR Satelite DVR on Cable etc. I have had this for maybe a year or 2 and it is great. REMOTE IS A POOR DESIGN. Changing from Cable to SAT or zone 2 is on the back side of the remote behind a door. Not difficult, just could have been easier on the front. Customer Review 2 : Consider Onkyo - Timothy J. Brun - I have had this reciever for 6 months and watched 14 movies with it and the HDMI output has stopped working. Consider Denon's warranty when purchasing this product. When the reciever goes bad, the consumer is responsible for shipping cost to one of 6 service centers in the country. They run on a 3 week backlog. I will really enjoy disconnecting, waiting 3 weeks, paying for shipping, and reconnecting the reciever in my dedicated home theater room. I will hook up my spare Onkyo that works in the meantime. |

Denon AVR3310CI 7.1-Channel Multi-Zone Home Theater Receiver with Networking Capability and 1080p HDMI Connectivity Overviews The AVR-3310CI is a technological tour de force, designed for consumers wanting to network their AV system. The amplifiers can be assigned for 7.1 channel surround sound, or a 5.1 channel system in the “main” room and power a pair of speakers in a second “zone”. This only scratches the surface of the AVR3310CI Multi-zone (3) / multi-source (3) capability. Customer Review Best Customer Review : I had been scoping out Denon's and other brands for a while. I finally decided on this unit due to it's features and price point. I highly recommend the Denon website for comparing different XX10CI models. So far, I have been happy with my purchase. It has a whole host of features including up-converting all inputs to HDMI, HD Radio, Sirius capable, 5 HDMI inputs, 3 audio zones, and completely re-assignable digital/analog inputs. The ability to reassign different audio and video inputs on the fly has turned out to be quite useful, something I did not anticipate. Overall sound quality has been superb so far. One downside is menus can be a little slow to navigate through, and the GUI isn't too sharp looking. It's certainly not the XMB from Sony, but it's functional. If I wanted cool looking menus with overpriced sound, I would have bought a Sony. Features that this unit does not have include dual HDMI outputs (I don't really foresee myself having two TV's in one room), and the ability to network wirelessly. I plan on purchasing a Denon iPod dock (the -3w or -51w, I don't know if the -51w is worth the price difference) which should allow wireless connectivity to my computer. One downside that surprised me was the need to have HDCP HDMI devices connected. I have an older Motorola cable box from Comcast with DVI output, and the 3310CI would not pass the video from the cable box using a DVI/HDMI cable, so I have to use component cables. Not a huge problem, but stupid IMO. Comcast told me they won't provide true HDMI boxes unless you pay for DVR (we already have it in another room, so I didn't need a second DVR), and HDCP is just another stupid security control. One other downside, which I'm still toying with, is the ability to select inputs with the Comcast programmable remote. (For anybody who doesn't know, the standard Comcast remote is very powerful and can be fully reprogrammed, but they don't tell you this. There are many websites with more info on this.) My roommate has an older Denon that I was able to control inputs, volume, and power with the plain old gray Comcast remote. So far I just have the volume and power with the 3310CI, while the number pad isn't quite matching up to the input numbers on the back of the Denon remote. I ended up picking up this unit at a certain popular electronics store for 00. It was not an advertised sale in either their circular or on their weBsite, But the posted price appeared in their computer. My advice is to wait till this thing goes on sale, but it's still worth a GOOD BUY at full price. (I think my hints were obvious enough, no?) Customer Review 1 : LG, Samsung and JVC Blu Ray owners beware! - Evgueni Sokolovski - Herndon, VA United States There is a problem with Denon 2310/3310/4310 receiver line playing TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio track when connected to LG, Samsung or JVC Blu-Ray players. The receiver shows that it is receiving the HD audio signal from the player and the HD audio blue light comes on the front of the receiver but then instead of sound you get a "helicopter" like noise or no sound at all coming from the speakers. There are multiple reports from 2310,3310 and 4310 owners about this problem on AVS Forum. The receiver plays sound fine when Blu-Ray player sending Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital+, DTS or Multichannel PCM, but not theDolby TrueHD or DTS-HD Master Audio sound track. After I sent the receiver in for service to Denon NJ factory for repair, the receiver came back with the problem not repaired after 3 weeks in the service center. This is very unfortunate problem as the receiver has a great set of features |

Customer Review Best Customer Review : A friend recommended Denon as a good receiver when I started shopping for a replacement for my 30 year old Sansui Stereo. He worked for a Home theater installer and said they never had an unhappy customer after setting them up with a Denon system. I've been using this receiver for a couple of months now and couldn't be happier with it. Set it up with some good quality speakers and you won't regret buying it. I went with Cerwin Vega VE series center and surrounds to go with a pair of Cerwin Vega Three way floor speakers I already had. The system sounds better than any boxed system I've ever heard. I listen to a lot of music (all kinds)and it's a joy to hear old favorites with a degree of clarity and precision I didn't know was possible. With my home made 12" powered sub woofer my home theater sound rivals any theater I've been in. Just hearing the Dolby Surround or THX intro noise at the beginning of several movies has sent shivers of pleasure up and down my spine! Literally! And the reciever does a great job of converting Any stereo or 5.1 source, digital or analog, into great sounding 7.1 surround sound. The Audyssey auto speaker calibration works great, just plug in the supplied microphone and follow easy to understand on screen instructions. I found the manual to be a little confusing at first and the two sided remote takes some getting used to but now I do all I need to with ease. I would highly recommend this receiver to anyone that wants 7.1 sound or 5.1 with stereo in another zone such as bedroom or patio. You can download the manual from the Denon website for a more in depth look at the possibilities and capabilities of this marvelous (IMHO) receiver. Customer Review 1 : Denon AVR 790 = Excellent! - JohnTempe - Tempe, AZ USA What an upgrade from my previous system- excellent surround sound with the Audyssey EQ. A great value for the sound alone, but also has upscaling/upconverting Analog to HDMI and HDMI to HDMI, to 1080p. My 7.1 is set up with surrounds in the back, but you have the option of front height speakers instead. Hard to set up if you use the manual alone, so make sure you get Batpig's on-line guide (search "Batpigs Denon") and also read through the AVS forum owner's thread. The extra time it takes to understand the system and how to set it up is well worth it. |

Customer Review Best Customer Review : This Denon 3808ci is a monster when you take it out of the box, it has many ways to hook up your audio equipment, old or new. This unit is not for the casual user but one who will take time to learn the system and its many features,I have had mine since 08 and still I an messing with the controls and fine tuning it to my liking. To sum it up it well built and a solid performer, get ready to feast your eyes and ears on quality. Customer Review 1 : Too complicated - Kazo - Pacific Northwest I have used this receiver for two years. It sounds great, performs well, and has more features than anyone will ever use. But it is so painfully difficult to use that I do not recommend it to anyone who is not willing to spend at least two semesters of hard study at Denon U. Just changing bass, treble, balance, or anything else that should be very basic will have you reach for the manual, and then good luck. Many times I have given up and just call tech support. At least it's an 800 number, and you usually don't wait longer than 15 minutes. Could save you hours trying to figure it out yourself. Customer Review 2 : Consider Others First - Booked - CO I bought this receiver after owning several higher end units. I've spent a lot more and they just didn't last long enough to justify the high price. As soon as the warranty ran out, they crashed hard. I loved the sound, but I was willing to make sacrifices to not have to pay very much. I'm a little shocked to see all the very high reviews, so I decided to post to give the full story on this unit. Please try to listen and use this unit prior to buying. Also, do a quick search for reviews and forums to complete the picture. The features of this unit are second to none. I chose it because I got tons of great connections and I thought the network access would be nice. The reality is that the video conversion is not very good. The HDMI will actually cut out quite a bit so you'll have to get use to it. Its really slow to "re-sync" the signals. Do a quick search on this to see how other users are dealing with the common issue. Other reviews complain about the interface. I use tons of software and electronics and even taught UI development so I've seen really bad interfaces. I really thought that no matter how bad it is I could use it and/or figure it out....wow, was I wrong. The UI is amazingly bad. Microsoft would even fix it before shipping. The menus are odd to say the least. Typically, I use the web UI. Its not nearly as feature rich, but at least you can quickly do a task. As far as the sound goes, I find it to be adequate and right inline for the price. I've made tons of tweaks and still cant quite get the lush sound I had before, but its adequate. The bottom line is the unit is feature rich and output is right in line with other units in this price range. The UI will frustrate the heck out of you and the video conversion is not exactly what you think you are getting. If I could do it over again, I would choose a different unit. |

This includes for the surround back channel speakers to give you more clearly defined sound localization at the rear for 6.1-channel surround sources such as DTS-ES Discrete 6.1/Matrix 6.1/NEO:6 and Dolby Digital EX. The power amp circuits have been designed to reproduce exceptionally high sound quality with a wide frequency response from 10 Hz to 100 kHz. Denon's multi-room entertainment system feature lets you select different audio sources for listening in different rooms, and the AVR-787 offers two zones. The AVR-787 is XM Radio ready (optional XM tuner required) and offers XM-HD surround sound. It's also compatible with Denon's ASD-1R control dock for iPods. It features a 56-station AM/FM/XM random preset memory tuning. For video connections, this receiver offers three sets of component video inputs that maintain a flat response up to 100 MHz to ensure sharp video quality, as well as three sets of S-Video switching and a front composite video input. It also offers a video up/down conversion function (composite to/from S-Video; composite to S-Video/component). With Denon's Auto Setup feature, you can confirm speaker phase, assess the size of all your speakers, measure speaker-to-listener distances, and balance speaker levels. With the included DM-S205 microphone placed in your favorite listening position, Auto Setup uses a test tone generator and proprietary programming to precisely balance speaker levels and fine-tune the delay settings for each speaker. The result is optimized system performance for your specific home theater room. You can customize the performance of this receiver to suit your home theater and enhance operating ease. Adjustments are easy to make via a dialog format on the fluorescent display on the front panel, and these customized settings are then stored, for each source input and surround mode, in a personal memory setting. Put yourself in the middle of your favorite concert hall and music environments with Denon's DSP acoustic environment simulation modes, which include jazz club, rock arena, video game, virtual surround, and mono movie. Other features include:
The sound from movie sources recorded in Dolby Digital, DTS, or other formats emphasizes high-frequency range due to a theater's front speakers being placed behind the movie screen. If this sound is reproduced in the home theater without correction, the high-frequency range is too strong. This Denon receiver's Cinema Equalizer feature corrects these high-frequency components so that the sound is clearer and easier to listen to when using Dolby Digital, Dolby Pro Logic II, Dolby Digital EX and DTS surround modes. Customer Review Best Customer Review : I've been an audio engineer most of my life. Spent 43 years at ABC-TV. Got 2 Emmys for my work. I worked everything from uontold numbeer of Wide World of Sports to 12 Academy Awards. I say this because I hope you will understand when I say...."This DENON Surround Sound VR-2809CI IS FABULOUS!" I know whereof I speak. One tip....The setup is quite tricky. If you are new to this sort of Receiver/Amplifier, you would be wise to have it professionally installed. It handles 7 plus components for me and once it's setup you can sit back and relax. I thot I knew what I was doing and ended with a pro installation. However you go, you will not be unhappy. Customer Review 1 : Denon Receiver - Dustin Aimes - Huron, SD United States Wow!! This receiver is amazing. We are so glad we spent the extra money to buy this one. Fantastic sound, takes care of the variable sound issue when commercials come on. Would definitely use this vendor again, product was shipped quickly and was exactly as described. Customer Review 2 : Audissey is always a good option? - Gilberto Dotti Cesa - Flores da Cunha, RS Brasil I bought this receiver and after some days I got to setup it correctily ... I think. The Audissey options sounds great for some blu-rays like Ted Nugent and Incubus at Red Rocks, because these blu-rays have a weak sound ... Audissey puts them on fire, especially the drums of Ted Nugent's blu-ray. Return to Forever's blu-ray doesn't need the Audissey on, because the sound is really great!!! NIN didn't sound good either with Audissey on. Anyone thinks/hear like me??? |
