Related Products Customer Review 1 : Pyle PLTTB3U BELT DRIVE - NOT DIRECT DRIVE - sharpie - I just received this turntable as an early Christmas present. Thank goodness my wife decided to give it to me early, that way all the headaches could be cleared so that it could actually be enjoyed for Christmas. First, this is NOT A DIRECT DRIVE TURNTABLE. It is belt driven. FALSE ADVERTISING! I was surprised to see a direct drive turntable at such a low price. Well, I have yet to see a direct drive at such a price! I am not a DJ nor a full-on audiophile. I can tell what does and doesn't sound good, and vinyl remains the best way to enjoy recorded music. I have little turntable experience. Were it not for the internet and some quick learning on my part, I wouldn't be listening to Queen's "Night at the Opera" while writing this. First, the manual is a joke. Four pages are dedicated to the device itself, the remaining 13 describe the included software used to digitize the vinyl. Out of the box it didn't work. Then I noticed the dangling belt. The manual does not describe how to install the belt (why would it..this is supposed to be direct drive, right??). To get the belt on, one has to remove the platter. How? Internet query 1. What is the belt path? Web query 2. (None of the helpful answers on the web were about THIS turntable though). Next, balance the tone arm and set the anti-skate, web queries 3 and 4. A key piece of information not provided nor discoverable is how much weight the needle requires. OK. Ready. Lay down the album, hit start, stylus down, and poor Freddy sounds like a chipmunk. Web query 5. Here is where this turntable performs better than most, especially at this price. It has a sliding pitch control (which means speed control) and the side of the platter has a pattern of white boxes spaced such that when illuminated with the strobe light the optical illusion of steady boxes indicates proper speed. This is pretty cool, but not really as I had to figure all of this out myself. Oddly, the product description says the light is optional, but there it was. Now Freddy sounds perfect. So, if nearly all the above weren't true, this would easily get 4 or more stars. This is a turntable featuring tone arm adjustment, anti-skate, speed control with strobe, anti-slip mat, dust cover, pre-amp adjust, usb, all for under 0. The sound quality is above average, and would certainly be prime with a stylus upgrade. BUT, it is not a direct drive (an inexcusable misdirection), and requires substantial user wherewithal to get working properly. I've tried calling the company, but they are closed Friday-Sunday. I'll update this review once I get some feedback from them. We were also considering a Pioneer at a slightly higher price. Not sure if I choose properly. |

Denon AVR-688 Dolby Digital Surround Receiver Features
Denon AVR-688 Dolby Digital Surround Receiver Overviews Dolby Digital Surround Receiver Denon AVR-688 Dolby Digital Surround Receiver Specifications The AVR-688 surround sound receiver is network ready and can integrate into a home networked system when used with the optional ASD-3W/3N iPod docks, allowing more sources for playback then ever before. HDMI 1.3a video switching has been employed for today's demanding HD sources, providing rich color quality for 1080p signals. Digital audio is distributed by either optical or coaxial connections to high speed surround processing circuits for premium quality Dolby Digital and DTS Digital decoding. Seven high-current style amplifiers are used in the AVR-688 to deliver clean, clear performance for unmatched sound quality from your DVD or set top box digital devices. Analog video up-conversion makes switching various types of analog video signals easy, as duplicate wiring can be eliminated and signals channeled into one single component video output. Audio Delay is provided to allow for exact matching of audio and video signals when signal delays occur from some audio/video sources. Our newly styled pre-programmed remote control provides ease of use for the newcomer, or enhanced use for the seasoned user. Related Products
Customer Review Best Customer Review : Not sure about the negative comments. This is a fantastic receiver for the going price of 0. Its a generation older, but has the goods. As has been mentioned in the other reviews, unfortunately processing HDMI Audio is not supported by the unit and you need to connect either an optical or coaxial digital audio cable to get Digital Dolby or DTS. This all works fine with my HDTV and my PS3. The Dolby Pro Logic II, Neural and Neo functions do a reasonable job of converting stereo into multi-channel. True Digital Dolby and DTS both sound great! Just beware that you will not be able to access some of the newest HD Audio formats as they are only supported across HDMI, but by using a toslink cable, the PS3 will happily pump out DTS or Digital Dolby tracks. Took me about an hour to set up everything, including setting the mic at the optimal 6 listening positions for the audyssey auto-calibration, setting up the assignable optical and coaxial inputs to the selected devices, running the tuner preset function, and setting the remote to work with my other components. Once setup, the auto-calibrate proved to be very accurate. A couple things to note, and this is what may have led to some of the bad reviews. First, there is a small power button next to the much larger Standby/On button. I didn't expect it, but this was off when I unpacked the unit. So, after hooking all the speakers up (The Boston Acoustics Horizon Series MCS100MDNT 5.1-Channel Speaker System (Black) also bought from Amazon on a Hot Deal of 0 and a great speaker system) and the PS3, I plugged in the unit and nothing. But after going thru the admittedly weak manual and looking carefully at the front panel I found the power switch, and everything came to life. During the auto-calbrate, after the measurements of the 6 locations are done, the receiver will hop to the Calculate function. The manual says it will go to a check function afterward. What it doesn't specifically state is you have to kick off the calculate. I sat there for about 10 minutes before I thought something was up. Hitting the left arrow on the remote, the display then started flashing Calculating. A minute later it advanced to the check function. The remote is a bit bizarre with the two sided operation (The back side controls are under a flip door), but works fine and can be set independently for each component. It now can control my HDTV for instance. All in all I am very happy with this purchase and the BA Speakers. Customer Review 1 : circuit protection disables the device after a few months - Dustin J. Bixler - cincinnati OH design error in this receiver presents itself with a blinking red power light shortly after turning the unit on. the blinking light is the circuit protection detecting a short in the circuitry, the only problem is that the circuitry shouldnt be shorting out after only a few months. you will find this a common problem for this unit if you search online. Denon makes it very clear in the one year warranty that the store where you bought it (circuit city) is responsible for repair and tech support. if you are trying to fix your AVR-688, use a multimeter and check the resistance between the speaker +/- outputs (red and black) and signal inputs (check each input with every other input), along with the resistance of the components in the power board (the board that the power goes into is reasonably easy to remove with a philips screwdriver and needle-nose pliers). if you find the short, desolder and solder in a new part, or if its a speaker channel you can live without (you already lost your money), just clip one of the wires in the short circuit path. one good thing- this reciever has a lot of nice features and settings (even though it doesnt do dolby through the HDMI port) Customer Review 2 : Great powerhouse for a minimal outlay. - Old Scout - Ohio I am writing this as many people have complained about how hard this was to setup. This astounds me, I had this setup in the matter of a couple of hours. That might sound like a lot, but I'm running a Wii, a Mac Mini, Technics CD player, bluetooth gateway and HD cable out to my main tv. I can also recommend the Polk TSi line of speakers with this for both Home Theater and Music. This receiver gives you a lot of options for input and output, deciding on what you want and need will take you a bit, but the results are well worth it. I've had this for a little over a week and I'm still discovering the full power of this beast. If you have a chance to grab this at a discount price jump for it. |

Customer Review Best Customer Review : I bought the AVR-1908 on clearance because it had everything that I needed. I currently have it setup with 5.1 in my main listening room and Zone 2 pushing a couple of speakers on our patio. It handles multi-channel PCM from Blu-Ray players with no problem at all. I didn't need to see a "True HD" logo when playing my Blu-Rays, but if you do the newer model AVR-1909 will do that for you. For me, multi-channel PCM over HDMI is all I need. It gives the full uncompressed HD audio. The Blu-Ray disks I have played have all sounded great. Everything blends well and the vocals are all crisp and understandable. The sound is warm and full. It sounds much fuller than the same speakers driven with a 5-year old Yamaha 5.1 receiver. Music CDs sound great as well, and the simulated 5.1 adds some depth. I found the setup to be not nearly as complex as others have. The auto-setup worked OK, but I did tweak some of the values a bit (it left the subwoofer at -12db which just was not enough bass). I did this all without ever hitting a wrong key or having to consult the manual. I only wish it could display the on-screen menu through HDMI, but I knew before buying that it couldn't. It displays just fine over component video. While the menu is not flashy at all (white text on a black screen), it does get the job done. The remote, I must say, is as horrible as others have said. Having to flip it over and open a flimsy door to reveal some functions I commonly use is a pain. I wish they had incorporated a slightly wider remote with all function keys on the front. Oh well, I'll most likely get a Harmony One or something similar to control all of my gear so that will take care of that problem. Overall, I'm very pleased with the purchase and would definitely buy it again. If you can still find one for a good deal, I would get it and save hundreds over the current year's model. I almost knocked off one star for the horrible remote control, but the rest of the strengths definitely overshadow this one weakness. Customer Review 1 : awsome reciever - H. barraza - RiVeRSiDe CoUnTy i have this baby connected to my tv 42in LG to my ps3 to my comp to my wii to my cable box to my ipod i have klipsch speakers n klipsch subwoofer and these babys hit hard super bass time i think a have a few more input conentions but i dont have anything to pluggin as for the bad reviews don't buy use just buy it new its worth what ever the price it is and i got mine expensive and it still working :) Customer Review 2 : Great reciever AVR-1909 - M. Haering - NY Love this reciever, when I ordered it they actually sent the 1909 which is the 09 model. Works great with PS3 and Samsung 52" A850 perfectly. Only complaint is the controller buttons on both sides, it this does not matter as most people get a universal controller anyway. Awesome!!! |

Denon AVR1601 Dolby Digital Audio/Video Receiver Features
Denon AVR1601 Dolby Digital Audio/Video Receiver Overviews The AVR-1601 A/V receiver lets you enjoy home theater entertainment through a wealth of easy-to-use functions and superior sound quality. It provides five high-powered channels of 60 watts each and of course supports Dolby Digital and DTS, to give you the scintillating experience of cinematic surround sound in your own home. Even if you have only two speakers, one for each stereo channel, the AVR-1601 includes a Virtual Surround mode that still lets you feel wrapped up in sound as you would in a real theater. Customer Review Best Customer Review : I've had this receiver for about a year and I really like it. If you're looking for a good quality entry level receiver that sounds great but isn't a "nut rumbler," this Denon would be a great choice. It gets only four stars because it comes with quite possibly the most abysmal remote I've ever encountered. More than one optical input would be nice, but it's not too big of a problem. |

Customer Review Best Customer Review : The quality of the audio is excellent, far better than that of a very good Onkyo receiver that cost about twice much 13 years ago, which I've replaced with the Denon. I bought this Denon 2308CI largely to listen to music either on CDs or Apple TV. It matches nicely with my B&W DM602 S3 speakers, when bi-amped. I'm very pleased with the result. I also use this for playing DVDs and watching HD channels with digital audio. The best advice I can give those who have trouble setting this up is to not use the remote, but the buttons on the front of the receiver itself, which is what I ended up doing until I later figured out the funky remote control. For those who get frustrated with all the remotes and all the "modes" that have to be set to use each kind of media device, I would highly recommend getting one of the Logitech Harmony remotes. Just plug it in to a USB port on your computer, tell what your devices are, and then set up each of the activities. After that, you just need the Harmony remote, and life gets much simpler since it turns on the appropriate devices and puts everything into the right "modes" so it all works. My wife loves it. Also, you need to know that the Denon 2308CI is being replaced by the newer 2309 model. So the 2308CI is about half the price it was before, around 0 where I bought mine online in Nov., 2008. If you need more HDMI inputs, then you'll need to go with the newer models. A lot of the frustration in the initial setup could be avoided, if you use only the buttons on the back of the main remote control, or you use the buttons on the front of the 2308CI itself. Even so, once I got my bi-amped speakers wired up to the 2308CI, I was playing CDs my DVD player in about 5 minutes. Granted, I'm experienced in setting up electronics, home networks, computers, etc., so I did not pay attention to the manual much (and that's why I missed the part about using the back of the remote). If you use the buttons on the front, some of them do not work in the Menu setup--e.g., the Return button, to go back to the previous menu--so you end up getting stuck). The Denon engineers ought to do some usability tests of their menu systems for setup, which sometimes use unconventional ways of selecting or setting things and are inconsistent in some button functions which have further "modes". For example, in the setup menus, the left-arrow button is sometimes used to go forward to a sub-menu, whereas the convention in most user interfaces is to use the right-arrow. At other times, the left/right arrows are used for scrolling through horizontal lists of choices. The main remote control that comes with this 2308CI is also laden with "modes" especially when it comes to controlling different devices--using the combinations of different positions on the 2 slide switches at the bottom. This can drive you nuts, if you're not paying attention. E.g., if the left switch is not set to audio, then the buttons on the back for the Menu setup won't work, yet another obstacle to doing the initial setup that is frustrating. The fact that I'm very happy with the quality of the audio (and HD video) outweighs the initial frustration of dealing with all the "modes" that need to be understood to do the initial setup. The excellent quality of audio/video engineering this receiver and the bargain price, for me, outweighs the usability challenges in the remote control in setting this system up, due to all the modes. In my opinion, as one who has done hundreds of usability tests of software interfaces, Denon ought to hire some usability evaluators, and observe the problems people have in trying to user their manuals and remote controls. Then maybe they would improve their manuals and remotes, which unfortunately are a far cry from the excellent engineering of the audio and video quality. Customer Review 1 : AVR-2308 - Robert R. Carron - Walla Walla washington Excelent product, purchased as a display model and the only issue was the remote rear cover was damaged ,so I bought a Logitech Harmony to replace it (much Improvement) the unit is easy to setup and produces some of the best sound I have ever heard from a AV recever. I have reviewed several and the only one I thought sounded even close good was a Sherwood Newcastle (all the pioneers where to easy to clip (power issues ) the yamahas where stout but flat for music, the Sherwood sounded good but ran hot and did not like the looks. Customer Review 2 : This thing is SWEET! - Paul Plaster - This stereo is totally sweet. I personally didn't find it complicated to set up at all. I took it out of the box and had it all set up within an hour. The complicated remote doesn't bother me, because after it's all set up initially, all you are using it for is to switch inputs and adjust the volume. I took a couple of opportunities to really crank this thing up and at max volume I didn't hear any distortion whatsoever. All of my music sounds perfect and all of my movies are better than the movie theater I worked at. Connected to my HDTV, this makes the ultimate home theater system. There is no better choice for the money, even before the HDMI up-conversion abilities of this receiver. |

Customer Review Best Customer Review : I was replacing a Marantz SR7500 with this receiver! Audio quality is good. It seems to be driving a old Martin logan speakers (which are usually picky - needs good high power current amplifiers at 6 or 4 ohms to drive them). Denon 1508 is still not up to it and falls a little short. But I am not hearing any other extra noises/sounds/hisses from the amplifier. Cons: 1. remote is still too complex to use; still don't know how to setup other components to work correctly with this remote ( I had programmed Marantz and before that even a harmon-kardon remotes correctly!) 2. Didn't give an onscreen for configuring the receiver, though I have the TV attached using component cables. 3. video: no upgrading to even 720p at this price; just a passthrough Update after 6 months of use:Finding more problems as I try to use different features! Tried connecting HDMI input of DVD player to the receiver; looks like this receiver can only connect HDMI to HDMI (won't work unless you connect your TV to HDMI) Update: Another thing I found was the volume is low with Martin logans compared to if I use a normal 6 or 8 ohms speakers - this does mean that it is straining to supply high currents. Customer Review 1 : Features aren't features if you can't find them - RestonGL - Reston, VA USA I bought this as an inexpensive centerpiece for a basement AV system. Input, outputs and sound are fine. I almost wish I had paid more for a better designed unit. The manual is terrible. And there are so many "features" I will never use getting in the way of the simple ones I would like to find (for instance how do you get to the bass and treble controls!!!). Also, if you don't wear glasses then get some. The front panel controls are very small. |

Customer Review Best Customer Review : I purchased this receiver in June '08 as one of the key pieces of building my new home theater system. So far, I've been very pleased with this unit's functionality, customizable options, and, of course, its look and fit with the rest of my home theater system. Hooked up to this receiver are: -a Nintendo Wii; -a Sony PS3; -a Bose® Acoustimass® 10 Series home theater speaker unit; -a 52" Samsung LCD TV; -a HDTV DVR cable box from my local cable company; -a Panamax 5100-PM Power Line Conditioner; -three (3) 4' Monster M1000 HDMI cables; and, -two (2) 6' Belkin optical audio cables Setup was a relatively quick and straightforward. The manual was easy to read and follow. Once the speakers were hooked up, I plugged the Denon into the power supply and went to audio heaven. This unit supplied plenty of power to all 5.1 channels. Right out of the box, the audio seemed just right for my room; without making any fine adjustments, I experienced ZERO issues with any aspect of sound: no muffled/muddied voices, harsh highs non-existent, and there were zero indistinguishable bass notes. The LFE output on this unit really gets the living room walls shaking with the low notes and rumbles from explosions when watching movies, or when playing Call of Duty 4. Even when listening to the everyday radio or mp3's on my iPod, this Denon receiver delivers clean, clear power to every speaker and channel. The one thing that's worth noting concerns those all-too-important the HDMI slots. The two HDMI inputs on this unit are for VIDEO ONLY and the one HDMI output carries VIDEO ONLY. So if you want your HDMI connection to carry both audio AND video signals, then you'll have to find another Denon receiver because this unit won't do it for you. Though this may be an inconvenience for some people, this wasn't an issue for me, as I wanted to keep all audio signals separate from video signals (to maximize bandwidth within the cables). I wanted the HDMI cables devoted only to carrying video signals to maximize bandwidth to the TV to minimize as much audio/video lag as possible (of which there hasn't been any) I cannot comment on the remote control because I do not use it for day-to-day operations. For that, I use a Logitech Harmony One Advanced Universal Remote my wife bought for me, which gives me access to nearly all the functions that the Denon's factory remote control allows me to do. All in all, this receiver is a great purchase for the cost. It's an efficient and powerful receiver that's easy to set up and easy to customize. I look forward to many years of satisfaction from it! Customer Review 1 : Worst choice - R. Filizola - Sao Paulo, Brazil Even though it has good features and good sound, my receiver broke down six months after I bought. The worst thing is that when I took it to repair, I found several others with the same problem. I thought the DENON would be a reliable brand in quality. My mistake. It is not. Customer Review 2 : |
