Denon AVR-1709 7.1-Channel Multi-Zone Home Theater Receiver Overviews Music around the home is now easier to realize than ever before. The AVR-1709 features a powerful seven channel amplifier section that can be easily configured for a 7.1 channel surround sound loudspeaker system, or to drive a 5.1 channel surround sound system in the main room, while at the same time able to drive a pair of stereo speakers in another room. Featuring tremendous video signal handling flexibility, the AVR-1709 features three latest specification v1.3a HDMI digital video inputs and one HDMI output that handles HD signals up to the highest 1080p resolution. As well, the AVR-1709 features on-board video up-conversion, along with three HD component video inputs for additional video signal handling flexibility. For optimum surround sound quality, the Audyssey MultEQ in-room acoustic measurement and optimization system measures the loudspeaker’s overall response (at up to six different measurement points) and tailors the audio signal for the smoothest, most natural-sounding tonal balance throughout the listening space. And, the AVR-1709 is one of the first to offer Audyssey’s Dynamic Volume leveling system, which eliminates jarring volume jumps between TV shows and commercials, as well as Audyssey Dynamic EQ to ensure rich bass and smooth tonal balance, even at low volume levels. Two remote controls are provided – one for the main room, and a second easy-to-use remote control for second zone audio control. Related Products
Customer Review Best Customer Review : The receiver does everything I wanted it to do. I like how it upconverts to component via the red/white/yellow rca's. I have many things hooked up to it and this is a great feature for me. I have HD cable/xbox 360/wii hooked up to the components and I have my Macbook/ipod/and video camera hooked up to the rca's. All of these go into the receiver and 1 component cable out to my Plasma. All works seemlessly! The price was great! Shipping on time as well. Customer Review 1 : POS - F. Lentine - I purchased the AVR-1709 in January of 2009. Got it, set it up, very happy with it for about 4 weeks. One night while watching tv, there's a deafening sound that actually blows the cover off 3 of my wall speakers. The receiver stops making sound the next day. I drive it 30 miles to a service center, wait 3 weeks, drive back to get it and find out that the HDMI board went out. I used it for about 3 more months and occasionally, you could hear a speaker "pop" a little. After a couple of weeks of this my wife and I went out one night and left my in-laws watching our kids. They're watching TV at around 10pm when BOOM! Speaker covers blow off, 4 little kids awake screaming, my inlaws calling us and 911 together, total mayhem. I return it again, am without it (as well as TV, video games, movies, etc. because it's remotely installed) for another month and finally get it back and they tell me not to plug the cable box HDMI into the unit, but to use the components. Ok... Four months go by, and kaboom, again, then it stops making sound at all. I called Denon and asked them about cross-shipping a replacement and their only answer was to take it to the repair facility. Now I've had it a year and been without it almost a quarter of the time, so I decided to call Amazon and see what their advice was. As usual, the whole exchange took about two minutes, they issued me an RMA (1 year later, I might add) and I'm off to buy a Yamaha! Never, ever, buy anything that might break, fail, or come damaged from anyone but Amazon. Customer Review 2 : Returned - A. Mead - CA USA We ordered this receiver and installed it with our existing surround sound system, replacing a Yamaha receiver that had died. Within 4 days, the receiver simply turned off. The next morning we were able to turn it on again but it only stayed on for about 5 minutes before it shut down again. It sounded fine while it worked but we packed it up and shipped it back. We are going to try something else. |

The nine built-in amplifier channels, each rated at a robust 140 watts, can be configured for unprecedented flexibility and support for high-definition audio and video performance from all digital sources. The multi-mono block amp construction ensures top audio fidelity, and the Free Assign amp configuration function allows maximum system configuration flexibility. The amplifiers can be assigned for 9.3 channel surround sound, or a 7.1 channel system in the “main” room and power a pair of speakers in a second “zone”. Ethernet connectivity opens up your AV system to host of exciting capabilities like audio and jpeg photo streaming and Internet radio. Additionally, subscription music services like Rhapsody and Napster are supported. For video connectivity, it is equipped with 1080p compatible HDMI 1.3a Repeating technology. This HDMI connectivity supports the latest generation surround sound formats available on Blu-ray disc. DSX (Dynamic Surround Expansion adds front height and/or width channels to expand the soundstage. Front-panel audio/video inputs, including an HDMI input allows quick and easy connection of camcorders and game systems. The built in HD Radio tuner is multicast compatible Related Products
Customer Review Best Customer Review : Initially, I went through the struggle of choosing separates (pre-amplifier and amplifiers) versus a receiver (where the pre-amp and amplifier functionality is built-in to one unit). I liked the flexibility of having separate components in case I decide to make changes in the future, but simply did not have the space in my audio area to accommodate multiple pieces, hence my choice to look at receivers. There were many receivers to choose from and I found the Denon to be at my sweet spot for value, function, performance, aesthetics and simplicity. This beast of a receiver is one step below Denon's flagship AVR-5308ci. The AVR-4810ci delivers 9 amazingly clean channels of amplification without breaking a sweat. The GUI-driven menu takes a little getting used to, but after 4 or 5 uses, the menu becomes second nature. There's a plethora of inputs and outputs, and the capability to handle 3 subwoofers coupled with 9 channels for front, front height and/or width, surround, surround back and center channels allows for enormous flexibility with room for future expansion. There are 6 HDMI inputs (with one in the front panel behind the flip down door). Built-in WiFi allows for integration of other networkable sources in your home with no mess or fuss. Having Napster and Rhapsody online access built-in is extremely convenient and very easy to use. Satellite radio (XM and Sirius) can be handled by this beauty as can HD radio. With the USB input, you can playback photos or audio. Freely assignable amplifiers allows for bi-amping, bi-wiring and multiple zones (up to 4) throughout your home. This receiver can even control your iPod on-screen via the USB digital direct connection. The initial setup process is quick and simple, thanks the Audyssey MultEQ XT Room Equalizer that allows the receiver to setup all of your speakers' time and frequency response, for up to eight positions which is very handy if you have more than one person frequenting your listening area. The Advanced AL24 Processing Multi Channel features improved dynamics, so my sources sound phenomenal. The 1080p HDMI output via Anchor Bay's advanced VRS processing (using the ABT-2010 chip) and excellent scaling capability makes all of your sources look simply superb! Even your analog sources can be unconverted and scaled to 1080p!! As usual, Denon's Dynamic Discrete Surround Circuit (D.D.S.C-HD) provides for amazing sonic detail and extended range, with Burr-Brown 24-bit/192-kHz digital-to-audio converters for all channels, rather than just the front two. Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio decoders ensure amazing reproduction of your favorite Blu-Ray discs. As a bonus, you get dual HDMI outputs if you want to output to other rooms or to handle situations where you might have both a video projector and an HDTV flat panel in your theater. The "ci" designation means that the receiver supports custom integration features if you choose to do some advanced setup or are having the receiver professionally installed/integrated into your home. If there's one thing about this unit that I didn't like, it's the EL remote. I found the remote a bit clumsy to use and don't really use it much for controlling the receiver once initial settings are accomplished (as I use my Harmony universal remote instead). I also think the User Manual could use some tweaking to make the instruction flows easier to understand. I heartily recommend this receiver and have not regretted my purchase for even a second! Good luck with your choices and no matter what, ENJOY! |

Customer Review Best Customer Review : I have had this receiver for a month now and I'm extremely happy with the sound quality, which is the #1 reason for choosing a receiver. It also has every feature I needed and supports all the latest sound formats. I'm very happy with the upconversion video quality. Note that this receiver can take an analog SD or HD signal and convert it to digital HDMI output, so you only need one connection between your receiver and your TV. Many other receivers do not perform this conversion and you need multiple connections between your receiver and TV. Many people have complained about the manual and complicated setup. In my opinion, the manual is actually very good. The setup is obviously designed by engineers and not a human factors person. I would certainly not expect my parents to be able to set this up, but if you have decent technical knowledge, then you won't have any problems. I did need to consult the manual to understand some parts of the setup, but like I said, the manual was accurate and fine for someone of reasonable technical knowledge. If you want to see for yourself, just download the manual from Denon's web site before you buy it. The receiver does allow you to rename the inputs, but the way you assign the inputs to quick select is very strange indeed. Instead of labeling each input as HDMI 1 - 4, Component 1-2, etc., they label each input with a name such as DVR, DVD, etc. And some labels overlap between the type of input. For example, DVD is an HDMI input and a component input. If you have both DVD inputs in use at the same time, then it will not work by default. You have to go into the setup and assign the component DVD or HDMI DVD another default label, such as DVR. Then you can use both inputs. You can also rename DVR to a custom label, such as XBox or PS3, for example. It would be much more straightforward, if they just has HDMI 1-4, Component 1-2, etc., and then you could label each input with a custom label. Then you could also assign quick select 1 to be HDMI 1, for example. In any case, this part of the setup is complicated, but once it is set up, you don't have to mess with it, so it's worth the hassle if you can figure it out. You can also hide inputs you don't use. Once it is set up, you can press Source Select on the remote and see a list of inputs (with custom labels), and just choose the input you like. So when you see the select list, you will see PS3, Wii, Xbox, Tivo, Apple TV, etc., based on the custom labels you entered. This is nice and the way it should be. My only other complaint about the receiver is that the setup and selection screens are text based and look like they are from the 80s. It would be nice to have HD menus with nice graphics and fonts. However, you don't spend much time in the menus once the system is set up, so I can overlook this. Overall, the receiver is awesome. I would definitely buy it again. I wish they would address my complaints, and I'm sure they will eventually in new models, but like I said, my complaints mostly affect the usability of the setup, and once that is done, you can just enjoy the awesome sound! Customer Review 1 : Not hard to set up at all - Van L. Adams - Athens, OH First I want to say that this is the best reciever I have ever owned. The sound quality is fantastic, and I'm even running it through some fairly cheap yamaha speakers (plan on upgrading speakers soon). My family members have all been impressed by the sound. I can hear sounds in movies and songs that I didn't hear before with my old reciever. But you've probably heard all of this in other reviews. Second and more importantly I wanted to comment on how easy it is to setup. Someone previously wrote a review commenting on how complicated it is to use, and how he owns thousands of dollars of Mac equipment, and blah, blah. I do not understand this at all. I have a samsung LED LCD tv, a samsung blu-ray player, a samsung cable box, a Wii, and I was able to hook them all up and get them all to work with little to no problems at all. I thought the interface was fairly simple and easy to use. The manual is not nearly as difficult to read and understand as other people have said. And the Audessey software runs you through the setup of the speakers step by step. I even got the anynet feature to work on my TV, so when I use my TV remote to adjust the sound it adjusts the sound of the reciever and shows you the sound level on the TV for the reciever, and when you turn the TV off it turns the reciever off. The only gripe I have is with the HD decoding: with some blu-ray player models (including my blu-ray player) you have to have the blu-ray player do the HD sound decoding and not the reciever. This is a known issue with this reciever and some blu-ray players. The denon people on the denon forums say that it sounds the same regardless of which device does the decoding, and that the only thing you are missing by having the blu-ray player do the decoding is the blue light come on on the reciever. But I still think I would rather have the reciever do the decoding. Anyways, that is my 2 cents on this excellent reciever. And as a side note, if you are having trouble using this reciever, just google batpig, and use his guide. Customer Review 2 : Mostly wonderful to own and operate - Adam Collins - Bellevue, WA As with the other Denon components I've owned, the AVR-1910 is well buit, cool running, sonically excellent, and (mostly) wonderful to own. First, the three niggling bits: 1) Denon needs to stop putting meaningless ("SAT", "DVD", "DVR", etc.) labels on inputs, 2) the on-screen configuration interface seems dated, especially for a digital receiver and 3) the remote control interface is finicky: press the buttons too rapidly and the poor receiver is likely to be confused. I gripe about the input labeling because it just makes things more confusing when you're wiring up your receiver. You can rename all of the inputs through the on-screen interface anyway, so why not just give the inputs a number or letter? Let me explain the remote thing, also, and describe why it can be frustrating. The remote interface has a repeater function, much like a computer keyboard: hold a key down for more than half a second and the key starts rapidly repeating itself until you let up on it. Well, the AVR-1910 has that too and it is gets in the way more often than it helps. It's frustrating with the on-screen interface and annoying with the volume control (3 slow taps means +/- 1.5 db, while 3 quick taps could mean anything from +/- 1.5 db to +/- 6.0 db). You'll get used to all of that though, which is why I gave the AVR-1910 a 5 star rating and recommend it as a home theater receiver. The big points for me were the 4 HDMI inputs, generous power output, wonderful video scaling, and the reliability that Denon is known for. I had no idea that the quick select function would be so nice, so that was a major bonus. Basically, you get all of the settings (input options, output options, and volume) the way you want them and hold one of the three "quick select" buttons down. From then on, pressing that quick select button on the receiver (or remote) will recall all of those settings. Even better, the receiver lets you name each of the three quick selects. Despite a few interface issues, this receiver is satisfying and I highly recommend it to anyone in the market for a mid-range 7.1 A/V receiver. |

Customer Review Best Customer Review : The Onkyo TX-607 is an awesome receiver. This receiver replaced my JVC receiver which was approximately 15 years old. The instructions were easy to follow and the calibration of the speakers was interesting to say the least. Once I hooked my speakers up to this baby and heard the sound quality I could not believe I was using the same speakers! WOW! The sound blew me away! I was so enthralled by the sound quality that I spent several hours sampling DVDs from my collection to hear all of the different sounds that I had missed using my old receiver. Also, If you turn the volume down, you don't lose sound quality from the surround speakers (great feature!). The receiver has too many features to mention. The receiver does run hot, but as long as you ventilate the system it should be fine. Probably best to place in an open cabinet or an open shelf type system (DO NOT PLACE IN AN ENCLOSED CABINET). Occassionally, I will hear a very short gap during television broadcasts and during playback of programs recorded on my Directv DVR. I don't know if its due to my setup or the receiver. I will try to give an update once I find out what's causing that problem. Hey, no receiver is perfect. You will find issues with receivers costing twice as much as this one, but I challenge you to find one with better sound quality and more features at this price range. Customer Review 2 : great for the money - G. slaymaker - it is a rare instance when buying something that you get more than you expect. This is one great buy for the money, It has improved my sound. I had a 6 year old Pioneer Elite and this is much cleaner than it. The the remote and controls are fairly easy to understand. I love the sound set up system. It is truly worth the money. |

Customer Review Best Customer Review : After spending weeks of researching A/V receivers, I chose the AVR-590 to replace my old, non-HDMI Sony receiver. I had a 5.1 setup and didn't need anything fancy, but I didn't want something mediocre either. On paper, this model had all the features I needed (HDMI switching and automatic speaker setup) for a very reasonable price. This is my first Denon receiver, and I have been using for over a month. Setup - I consider myself technically inclined, so when I read the manual for the first time, it wasn't too complicated. However it's layout is not very intuitive, so I can see where people who are technically challenged may have issues with the Denon manual. I went to the BatPig Web site to download instructions, just in case I had a brain fart reading the manual...I found that both the BatPig instructions and the Denon manual complimented each other well, so setup ended up being pretty easy. You have the option of setting up the receiver with the speakers either manually or automatically. Being naturally lazy, I opted for automatic (Audyssey) setup using the included microphone. When doing automatic setup, be sure to use the on-screen menu and definitely test all 6 sound locations to get an accurate audio "sweet spot". Sound - Wow. This is where going through the setup pays off. Whether you're watching something with Dolby Digital/DTS encoding or just listening to music, the sound is very full and crisp. You have several sound field settings to chose from, as well as manual volume adjustment to suit your listening tastes. I use HDMI for the HD and Blu-Ray sources and Digital Optical for DVD sources. Although the speaker system I have in place is modest, it handles all audio sources beautifully. Listening to music or sounds from TV/movies is an absolute treat to the ears with this receiver. Video - Excellent. With the AVR-590, I used its HDMI out for video from DirecTV and Blu-Ray sources. I hooked up Component video for my DVD changer, because it is a pre-HDMI device. The receiver uses the most current HDMI standard (1.3a), and picture on my 120Hz LCD from both outputs is vivid and sharp, with no ghost images or signal loss at all. Watching from any video source is pure (pardon the pun) eye-candy. Performance - Excellent. One evening, I did my best couch potato imitation and watched a bit of DirecTV HD & a couple of Blu-Ray movies for nearly 8 hours straight. Afterward, I checked the receiver to see if it was getting hot, and surprisingly there was hardly any heat coming from it. Dynamic EQ seems to work, as I have not noticed any of those annoying commercials that scare the bejeezus out of me when watching TV programming. I definitely feel like I'm in a theater when watching anything on this system. Overall - Excellent. Even with decent speakers and a good LCD, plugging in a new receiver really makes a difference...I now find myself losing track of time while listening to vibrant sound and watching brilliant video! If you have under 0 to spend on a quality 5.1 receiver, this is it. Don't mind what others have said about setup issues, because it really isn't that difficult to set up. For the features that it offers at its price range and the performance you get in return, I do feel you get the best "bang for your buck". Customer Review 1 : Denon AVR590 - Vernon H. Grant - Hooked up easily, excellent sound from 5 speakers + 1 sub woofer. I had no idea of the complexity of formats there are for surround sound systems, and bought a book (Practical Home Theater), to explain much of what I was supposed to know already. Book very helpful. Audessy EQ very easy to set up and balanced the speakers better than I could have. The effect this receiver has on blu ray movies is amazing--adds as much realism as blu ray did to plain DVDs. |

Customer Review Best Customer Review : Since I'm brand new to the A/V world, I did a lot of researching before making my decision on which receiver to buy. I worked hard to figure out all the lingo and I checked out just about every option available below 0, including those with built-in DVD players, etc. I read every review I could find ([...] is great for this), posted questions on the AVS forums, etc. I'm very thorough when I'm spending a lot of money like this. I didn't need a 7.1 system so I focused on 5.1 systems. Even though I'm only using a 2.0 setup right now (front left and right speakers only), I want to be able to add the other speakers and a sub in the future. So my review is only on my 2.0 setup. I can't provide any feedback on a full 5.1 surround setup. One of the things I was looking for was upconverting (the ability to plug all of my components (HDMI, component cable, and composite) into the receiver and run 1 HDMI cable out to the TV for the video and speaker wires out to the speakers for audio). You can use the HDMI for audio too if you want to use your TV speakers, but if you're buying a good receiver, it just makes sense to buy some decent speakers to take advantage of it. Upconverting was essential for me since I'm mounting the TV on the wall about 15' away from the receiver and didn't want to buy lots of long cables for each type of input and then have to run them behind the wall. I was also looking for a receiver with lots of inputs to handle all of my components (HD DVR, Wii, DVD player, video baby monitor) and still have room to add more pieces in the future. I'm happy to report that I am extremely satisfied with my purchase. The receiver does a good job of upconverting the analog video inputs and they all look pretty nice on my 46" LCD. The video from HDMI inputs looks amazing. For audio, I'm using Focal XL speakers and they sound great! They provide lots of bass and dialogue is nice and clear. I haven't run the Audyssey program yet because the TV isn't on the wall yet but it sounds great even without having run it. I will provide an update once I get everything in it's final place. I just wanted to get my initial review posted since there aren't many on Amazon yet and I wanted to let everyone know that this is an excellent choice. The only drawback I can think of is that the manual isn't super helpful. You can find lots of help online, especially at batpig.com. Don't worry, it is a legit site. You can google it if you'd like. It is an excellent information resource for Denon receivers. Customer Review 1 : Couldn't be happier! - Jarrett - Western, NY I picked this unit up from a local shop who highly reccomended this receiver and started my research. It does everything I want, switch HDMI, video, pass through video, and produces great surround sound! My budget would be considered low to audio/video freaks, but I believe this receiver is the best bang for the buck! Currently I have: HD settop cable box, Blu Ray, Wii, and the boy's Click Start running through it. I love the HDMI switching for the simple fact that it allows me to run 1 HDMI from the receiver to the TV! Thanks Amazon for having a review section which aided me in my research to purchase! Customer Review 2 : Excellent product and service. - Schmidt - Great product, and I saved about 0.00 vs purchasing it locally. Buying electronics locally is a joke. It is extremely easy to hook-up. The auto calibration feature on most Denon receivers is a must. |

Customer Review Best Customer Review : I've always been a Denon fan; a great work horse system. I recently upgraded my AVR-1804 to the AVR-2309 after purchasing an HDTV from Amazon. Although I can see the point of reviews claiming a set-up which wasn't overly easy and a manual lacking in some detailed information, it really only took me about an hour and a half to have all seven speakers and all audio/video connections swapped from my 1804 to the new unit. Not half bad, considering the bulk of the time was spent contorting my body to fit behind my shelving...and I may have accidently swapped a left and right front speaker which needed to be rectified. All said and done, the sound is fantastic through my 5-year old Definitive 5.1 surround sound, only made better with the addition of a 4-year old set of Mirage surround sound standers. The existance of the photo port was my main reason for opting for this system over less expensive models, but thats also not to say I wouldnt have chosen this one anyway. With three HDMI ports, along with composite options, I can't complain of a potential lack of future resources. For those needing a fourth HDMI port, the AVR-2809 may be a better option for not much more money. All and all, I've been a huge biased fan of Denon equipment for over 25 years, and after hooking up the 2309, I have a feeling they'll have me in their pocket for 25 more. Customer Review 1 : It was better than I thought. - Al Shing - Philadelphia, PA Denon AVR-2309CI 7.1-Channel Home Theater ReceiverDenon AVR-2809CI When I first started to hook up my new 2309 I was expecting to have a difficult time to get it going based on many reviews that I read. To my surprise the hook up was easy. When I got it going I was blown away by the sound. I hooked up my Panasonic BD30 blu ray player and played Dark Knight Returns, the sound and video was top notch. My home theater speakers consist of 2 JBL E80's, 2 JBL E50's, 1 JBL ES 35 and my subwoofer HSU VTF-2 MK3. These speakers never sounded better. I would highly recommend this receiver. Customer Review 2 : Denon AVR-2309-CI - Joseph Madigan - Sounds great! Speaker setup was a snap with auto-program. Good receiver for the price. Glad I purchased it. Used primarily with home theater and works well with the Samsung LCD TV. |

Denon AVR-688 Dolby Digital Surround Receiver Features

HDMI 1.3a video switching has been employed for today's demanding HD sources, providing rich color quality for 1080p signals. Seven high-current style amplifiers are used in the AVR-688 to deliver clean, clear performance for unmatched sound quality from your DVD or set top box digital devices. Analog video up-conversion makes switching various types of analog video signals easy, as duplicate wiring can be eliminated and signals channeled into one single component video output. Our newly styled pre-programmed remote control provides ease of use for the newcomer, or enhanced use for the seasoned user. Related Products
Customer Review Best Customer Review : Not sure about the negative comments. This is a fantastic receiver for the going price of 0. Its a generation older, but has the goods. As has been mentioned in the other reviews, unfortunately processing HDMI Audio is not supported by the unit and you need to connect either an optical or coaxial digital audio cable to get Digital Dolby or DTS. This all works fine with my HDTV and my PS3. The Dolby Pro Logic II, Neural and Neo functions do a reasonable job of converting stereo into multi-channel. True Digital Dolby and DTS both sound great! Just beware that you will not be able to access some of the newest HD Audio formats as they are only supported across HDMI, but by using a toslink cable, the PS3 will happily pump out DTS or Digital Dolby tracks. Took me about an hour to set up everything, including setting the mic at the optimal 6 listening positions for the audyssey auto-calibration, setting up the assignable optical and coaxial inputs to the selected devices, running the tuner preset function, and setting the remote to work with my other components. Once setup, the auto-calibrate proved to be very accurate. A couple things to note, and this is what may have led to some of the bad reviews. First, there is a small power button next to the much larger Standby/On button. I didn't expect it, but this was off when I unpacked the unit. So, after hooking all the speakers up (The Boston Acoustics Horizon Series MCS100MDNT 5.1-Channel Speaker System (Black) also bought from Amazon on a Hot Deal of 0 and a great speaker system) and the PS3, I plugged in the unit and nothing. But after going thru the admittedly weak manual and looking carefully at the front panel I found the power switch, and everything came to life. During the auto-calbrate, after the measurements of the 6 locations are done, the receiver will hop to the Calculate function. The manual says it will go to a check function afterward. What it doesn't specifically state is you have to kick off the calculate. I sat there for about 10 minutes before I thought something was up. Hitting the left arrow on the remote, the display then started flashing Calculating. A minute later it advanced to the check function. The remote is a bit bizarre with the two sided operation (The back side controls are under a flip door), but works fine and can be set independently for each component. It now can control my HDTV for instance. All in all I am very happy with this purchase and the BA Speakers. Customer Review 1 : circuit protection disables the device after a few months - Dustin J. Bixler - cincinnati OH design error in this receiver presents itself with a blinking red power light shortly after turning the unit on. the blinking light is the circuit protection detecting a short in the circuitry, the only problem is that the circuitry shouldnt be shorting out after only a few months. you will find this a common problem for this unit if you search online. Denon makes it very clear in the one year warranty that the store where you bought it (circuit city) is responsible for repair and tech support. if you are trying to fix your AVR-688, use a multimeter and check the resistance between the speaker +/- outputs (red and black) and signal inputs (check each input with every other input), along with the resistance of the components in the power board (the board that the power goes into is reasonably easy to remove with a philips screwdriver and needle-nose pliers). if you find the short, desolder and solder in a new part, or if its a speaker channel you can live without (you already lost your money), just clip one of the wires in the short circuit path. one good thing- this reciever has a lot of nice features and settings (even though it doesnt do dolby through the HDMI port) Customer Review 2 : Great powerhouse for a minimal outlay. - Old Scout - Ohio I am writing this as many people have complained about how hard this was to setup. This astounds me, I had this setup in the matter of a couple of hours. That might sound like a lot, but I'm running a Wii, a Mac Mini, Technics CD player, bluetooth gateway and HD cable out to my main tv. I can also recommend the Polk TSi line of speakers with this for both Home Theater and Music. This receiver gives you a lot of options for input and output, deciding on what you want and need will take you a bit, but the results are well worth it. I've had this for a little over a week and I'm still discovering the full power of this beast. If you have a chance to grab this at a discount price jump for it. |

DENON AVR4806 7.1 Channel A/V Surround Receiver Features
DENON AVR4806 7.1 Channel A/V Surround Receiver Overviews DENON has become a world leader in the manufacture of high quality audio and audio/video equipment and software products for the entertainment and information industries. Its professional-use and consumer-use equipment and software products are recognized internationally for their originality and standards of quality, durability and innovation. DENON is recognized internationally as Japan's leading manufacturer of high-quality audio and audio-visual products, and is the only company in the industry involved in the development and production of both hardware and software. Customer Review Best Customer Review : I started out looking at 0 A/V receivers, and gradually worked my way up to the Denon AVR-4806. Sometimes I think I must have been crazy, but more often I glad I bought this unit. What do you get for 3 grand? Needless to say, you get great sound, but you get a lot more. It is THX Ultra2 certified and will handle up to 10 speakers. So no longer do you have to live with a mere 2 channels of surround sound. It actually gives meaning to the word surround. It comes with a microphone (on a 20' cord) used to set the system up you plug it in and place the mike in various listening positions, and it determines all the distances and sound levels for each speaker automatically. Very cool! It has 3 HDMI inputs, so you can plug in your DVD player, Tivo Series 3, and Playstation 3 using HDMI and output them all via HDMI to your TV. In the present technology world this is the best way to connect things digitally. If your equipment doesn't have HDMI outputs, it will also accept component, analog and optical output and upconvert them flawlessly. The manual is about 150 pages, and not terribly easy to understand. When I bought it, it was offered by Crutchfield, and from Etronics (for several hundred dollars less). I paid the premium that Crutchfield charged, and I'm glad I did. With all the possible settings and confusion, I've already taken advantage of their lifetime tech support to get things working. The AVR-4806 is now discontinued, and is replaced by the AVR-4806CI. I understand the CI stands for `custom installation'. What the exact differences between the two are, I don't know, but for the additional ,000, I doubt they're worth it. If you want an audiophile quality receiver that is able to upscale all your inputs to 1080p, and can afford the relatively steep price tag (although half the price of the next level up), you won't be disappointed in this unit. Although no longer listed on Amazon as a vendor, Crutchfield still has a few left for ,999 (the AVR-4806CI is ,999 from them). Update 01/10/2007 - I must apologize for this review. After trying to hook up a 1080p device I learned that this unit does NOT switch 1080p. In fact that is the main difference between the AVR-4806 and the AVR-4806CI. The unit is now at Denon being upgraded to a CI. The AVR-4806 is discontinued, but still available from a few vendors (no longer at Crutchfield). I would not recommend buying from somewhere that doesn't offer robust tech support as it is a very complex piece of electronics. Again, my apologies to anyone who may have been mislead by my erroneous information. |

Customer Review Best Customer Review : I installed the Denon AVR-988 in my home theater system approximately one month ago. The sound quality is excellent and crystal clear with power to spare. Prior to buying this unit, I read most of the reviewers' comments on this site which convinced me to buy it. Another selling point was of course the price; I got this unit from Amazon in February 2009 for less than 0. In summary, this is an excellent AVR for listening to Audio CDs and Movies! Also, the set up right out the box was very easy for me and I am by no means an expert when it comes to audio-visual equipment. The user's manual was not difficult at all to understand; I found it to be very logically written and helpful. I would recommend the Denon AVR-988 to anyone looking to buy a quality AVR for their home theater system; make sure that you couple it with a high quality speaker system (including a subwoofer). Great AVR!! Customer Review 1 : Denon Dual zone receiver - world traveler - CA usa I love this receiver. Unfortunately, my last Denon died. I loved the sound quality so I got this. You can watch TV or a DVD in the Living room and Listen to music or TV or what ever out side with the second zone. Of course the Denon are the only receivers I have to hiring someone to set up because this surround sound stuff gets complicated, when you have Ipod, DVD, VCR Satelite DVR on Cable etc. I have had this for maybe a year or 2 and it is great. REMOTE IS A POOR DESIGN. Changing from Cable to SAT or zone 2 is on the back side of the remote behind a door. Not difficult, just could have been easier on the front. Customer Review 2 : Consider Onkyo - Timothy J. Brun - I have had this reciever for 6 months and watched 14 movies with it and the HDMI output has stopped working. Consider Denon's warranty when purchasing this product. When the reciever goes bad, the consumer is responsible for shipping cost to one of 6 service centers in the country. They run on a 3 week backlog. I will really enjoy disconnecting, waiting 3 weeks, paying for shipping, and reconnecting the reciever in my dedicated home theater room. I will hook up my spare Onkyo that works in the meantime. |

Denon AVR5700 THX Audio/Video Receiver Overviews Denon, the developer of the world's first A/V components that combined the magic of Dolby Digital with Lucasfilm's THX 5.1 technology, now elevates the performance standard with the new AVR-5700 A/V receiver packed with virtually every desirable feature for outstanding home theater and music surround sound enjoyment, the AVR-5700 is the only A/V component that provides optimized surround sound for both movie soundtracks as well as discrete multi-channel music surround. Powered by the newest high speed dual 32-bit DSP processors, the AVR-5700 includes Dolby Digital as well as DTS decoding, along with Lucasfilm THX 5.1 post-processing, entirely in digital domain - the world's first A/V receiver with this capability. The AVR-5700 is engineered for the future, with eight channel (7.1) inputs for the future multi-channel formats, and 8 channel pre-amp outputs for a clear system upgrade path. Able to accommodate virtually any present or future Source, the AVR-5700 provides component video switching along with "S" and composite video switching, and nine digital inputs (including one for RF laser disc), Premium 24-bit. 96-kHZ DACs on all six channels with Denon's exclusive 24-bit Alpha processing for the main (L/R channels), and a THX Ultra-certified five channel power amp section with an output of 140 watts per channel, all add up to the best-sounding A/V component available today. Customer Review Best Customer Review : Let me start off by saying that this receiver has practically anything and everything that most people will ever need for their home theater. Dolby Digital and DTS surround sound means that you can watch your favorite movies in any format you like best. THX-Ultra certified means that it is the top of the line. It has a very cool 5-channel stereo function, which I find wonderful when I listen to my CD's, music playing equally from all speakers. It has a plethora of inputs and outputs for basically everything. It has digital inputs that you wouldn't believe: 4 Optical, 3 Coaxial and an RF input for Laserdisc Players. It has 2 sets of Component Video inputs and 1 set of outputs. It has inputs and outputs for: Phono, CD, DVD, VDP, TV/DBS, Video Aux, VCR-1, VCR-2, MD/Tape-1 and Tape-2. It also has S-video inputs for all video sources. Surround sound wise, the AVR-5700 comes with 2 sets of hookups for surround speakers, Surround A and Surround B (it is the first receiver to have this). This is so you can use different surround speakers for music and movies. Which is very nice since some surround speakers are built specifically for movies while others are for music. It has a Video Select Function, which allows you to watch one source (visual) while listening to another source (audio). The remote this Denon comes with is a learning remote, which makes it so nice not to have a whole bunch of remotes laying around. It is also future sound format upgradable via 8-Channel inputs and outputs. All in all, this little baby (not too little, weighing in at a whopping 50+ pounds!) is worth every penny and more spent. I love my Denon, it has so many cool and interesting features, so much more than I can say. Buy this, and you won't be disappointed. Customer Review 1 : Definitely Ahead Of It's Time, Owned For Over 10 Years!! - Douglas Fitzpatrick - California, Mission Viejo USA This Denon AVR-5700 THX Ultra Receiver at it's time of availability was equal or better than many high-end seperate Pre-Amp Processors! The sound right out of the box sounded extremely detailed which no other receiver could match at the time, it's powerful 5-channel amplifier section 140W x 5 RMS is a monster! I have been driving my M&K THX Certified speaker system for just as long as I've owned this receiver, all while driving 4 ohm loads! My front three speakers (Left|Center|Right speakers) are rated at 4 ohms with a maximum 200W unclipped, I have always wondered how much more watts I'm pushing into a 4 ohm speaker? The amplifier is rated at 140W into an 8 ohm load, the fact that I'm pushing double that means this receiver can handle more than claimed by Denon! I have noticed a LOT of consumers are upgrading their receivers just to have the ability to play the new HD codecs Dolby True HD and DTS HD Master Audio, while there has been a double blind test at Dolby Lads in San Francisco, CA, the difference between the new and old codecs is at best subtle. These test were performed in an acoustically treated room and still very subtle differences were found! I have decided to continue using this receiver for a few more years as I'm using my Oppo BDP-83SE's 7.1 multi-channel analog outputs to the 7.1 multi-channel analog Ext inputs, the BDP-83SE's DACs are actually better than the Denon's Burr Brown DACs by a lot! Customer Review 2 : AHEAD OF ITS TIME - ERIC CABRERA - SAN DIEGO, CA United States Unlike many units out there, this one stands out as ahead of its time - and even by todays standards, still a major contender. Like the Acura legend, the AVR 5700 remains legendary. Quality build, rock solid performance for the HT enthusiast. Musical performance is also decent, especially due to ALPHA 24 processing. I have never clipped the amps on this unit running full throttle - of course, you must use tone defeat in order to eliminate risk; with good source the sound is very clean and undistorted. I use 5700 to drive 5 full range Paradigm's and often with subwoofer off - low end reached 30hz; ended up purchasing a sunfire sub to reach bottom end of 18hz. No regrets. |

Customer Review Best Customer Review : I searched for quite a while before I decided to purchase this Denon Receiver. I'm not an expert by any means and was very nervous about purchasing the right product. I easily found a lot of reviews for Denon and this specific receiver and it seemed like the right choice, so I jump in. While I waited for it to arrive, I discovered that you can download the manuals for all of Denon's Receivers online at their website - [...]. That was a nice discovery as it allowed me the opportunity to review how to set it up before it arrived and let me look at the connections and side notes. In looking at the reviews, most complaints about Denon had to do with the manual and remote controls. When the unit arrived it was well packaged and delivered as promised by the supplier via Amazon.com. It is very heavy! I was quite surprised, but there is a lot under the hood of this machine as I'm being told. The set-up was almost too easy in regards to wiring. In the end, I removed a bunch of wires from underneath my entertainment unit that I no longer needed. That was a pleasant surprise. I did have a slight problem with hooking up the speakers, but that was from being a novice and I did get it corrected fairly quickly. Once I turned it on, it took some time to figure out the remote. Again, I did see a lot of complaints regarding Denon's remotes in the posts that I read. I actually found it to be easy overall once there was a little time spent with it. I agree that it could be more enhanced to match the receiver sophistication. The 4308CI is a Network Streaming and WiFi unit. This is the area where I've had the most difficulty. I went to this level and expense because of these features and the multi zone capabilities. The manual leaves you guessing quite a bit in getting this all set up and working properly. I wanted to be able to stream music from my computer onto my stereo system. They recommend an online service called [...] in which to make this happen along with Windows Media Player. Talk about a joke in regards to explaining how to make this happen. I was extremely frustrated and spent a lot of time trying to figure out what to do. In the end, I got the internet radio services working, but I was unable to get my music off my computer to work through the system. I have a Mac Book Pro with a Windows environment which is where I tried to get the Media Player and Twonky working properly. In the end, my goals were not being reached. I wanted my iTunes to be able to play on my system along with my LaLa.com playlists. I have good news, it can be done and no one will tell you how unless you do a lot of researching. Make your life simple and get the Apple Airport Express. This little items costs around 0. You connect it to the back of the unit (I used the VCR/iPod connection ports). You then download the software, select the device on your computer, open iTunes and viola!! If you are familiar with [...], purchase the MP3's in your playlists and they will download into iTunes and you can then stream your music from there too. I'm happy as a bug now and listening to incredible tunes on an incredible system!!! I want to mention that I purchased the Definitive Technology Pro Cinema 800 Speaker System (5.1). These speakers sound awesome with the Denon Receiver and I'd highly recommend them. Customer Review 2 : Excellent Product But....a little patience required - Huey K. Huynh - Rancho Santa Fe, CA USA If you want an excellent AV with all the bells and whistle, buy this Denon. However, be prepared to have a lot of patience w/ its user manual. Read it once....or twice. And if you're still foggy as to what it's really saying, then try this: [...]. This is a "Please....Speak English" kind of manual specifically written for Denon AV. I used it to get the best out of my unit. By the way, try to team this up w/ the Denon DVD-3800BDCI blu ray (currently for sale @539 vs. 99 MSRP). It's the best combo system for under 2K. |
